MARION, Ill. (WSIL) -- The National Kidney Foundation of Illinois' "KidneyMobile" stopped at The Hub in Marion to offer free health screenings. The mobile unit provided screenings for kidney disease, high blood pressure and diabetes.
No appointment was required for the screenings, which ran until 6 p.m. Health officials emphasized the importance of staying current on personal well-being.
"Because kidney disease does not have symptoms until it's almost time for dialysis and the leading causes of kidney disease is uncontrolled high blood pressure and uncontrolled diabetes," said Regina White, CNA, CPT Senior KidneyMobile Manager.
"So a lot of people aren't aware that every day their blood pressure is up or every day their blood sugar is up, it makes their kidneys work harder and they're losing kidney function and they don't know it," White said.
People also had the opportunity to meet privately with a nurse or physician to discuss their results and learn more about their personal health risks. Organizers said if people missed the event, they can talk with their individual health provider.
"They can go to their doctor and ask them to check their kidney function and they can ask for their GFR, which stands for glomerular filtration rate," White said. "And so they can ask their doctor to check their creatinine and GFR."
The Kidney Mobile made several stops in Southern Illinois this week from Cairo to Murphysboro. Organizers said events like this help make preventive healthcare more accessible for local residents.
