MURPHYSBORO, Ill. — The Jackson County Health Department will partner with the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois to offer free kidney and diabetes screenings to community members at the JCHD Back Building from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 18.

According to a release from JCHD, screenings are available to adults 18 years of age and older. While walk ins are welcome, preregistration is strongly recommended.

Many health professionals refer to Chronic Kidney Disease as a "silent disease," as CKD may develop without noticeable symptoms in its early phases.

"If left untreated, CKD can lead to serious health complications, including high blood pressure, anemia, weakened bones, poor nutritional health, nerve damage and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease," the release read.

The health department reminds the public that maintaining kidney health is an important part of overall wellness. Healthy lifestyle choices, such as eating healthy, nutritional meals, staying physically active, avoiding tobacco use, and maintaining a healthy fluid intake can help reduce the risk of kidney disease and other chronic conditions.

For more information, contact the JCHD at 618-684-3143, Ext. 108. To preregister for a screening, click here.
