The Trilla Family Kidney Health Journey
Frank Trilla and his family have a personal connection to the fight against kidney disease that began over 35 years ago with John Trilla, Sr. – or “Babe” to those who knew him well. Needing a transplant, John didn’t need to look far. His own daughter, Pam, stepped up to provide him with a life-changing gift. In the years since that pivotal transplant, several members of the Trilla Family have fought their own battles with kidney disease – while others made the same life-changing decision to donate a kidney, providing the gift of life to their loved ones at a critical time.
Then, in the Summer of 2021, after surviving a bout with COVID-19, Frank learned that his own kidney functioning had plummeted to 19%, and he was placed on the waiting list for a kidney transplant. As they have done so many times before, the Trilla Family rallied around one another, helped Frank navigate the journey to transplantation, and on December 22, 2021, at Loyola Medical Center, Frank received the most meaningful holiday gift of his life, a kidney transplant - from his son Luke, who discovered he was a donor match earlier in the holiday season.
As an actively engaged elected official, and as dedicated members of both their own community and the greater kidney community, Frank Trilla and the Trilla Family are passionate partners of NKFI in the pursuit for kidney health. Over multiple generations, the family has raised awareness of the dangers of kidney disease, the importance of kidney health, and the impact of organ donation. Last fall, they planned and successfully executed a robust, family-friendly fundraising event at King Car Wash that raised nearly $70,000 in support of vital NKFI programs, services, and outreach. And in recognition of their decades-long commitment to the greater kidney community, NKFI will honor Frank and the Trilla Family with the Gift of Life Philanthropy Award at the 37th Annual Gift of Life Gala in October.
This year, The Trillas, NKFI, and King Car Wash will return to raise more awareness and support for the fight against kidney disease - and we need your support to reach more kidney patients, caregivers, and communities who deserve a future beyond their diagnosis.
