Professional Education
The NKFI has four professional councils which organize educational seminars and dinner lectures for their members. The Medical Advisory Board, consisting of physicians, surgeons and medical researchers, the Illinois Council of Nephrology Social Workers, the Illinois Council of Nephrology Nurses and Technologists, and the Illinois Council on Renal Nutrition plan programs to meet the needs of their members.
In addition to their professional meetings, the Councils plan projects throughout the year for the benefit of their patients.
Because more than 600,000 people in Illinois are affected by chronic kidney disease and most are unaware of their condition, the NKFI works with primary care physicians and their staffs to help educate them on the latest clinical guidelines and practices regarding the care of patients who are pre-renal failure. Dinner lectures and educational materials have been developed specifically for this group of health professionals.
Medical Research
Grants are applied for and distributed to third-year or higher Research Fellows dedicated to finding solutions to kidney and urological diseases and providing answers to help enhance the physical comfort and well-being of their patients.
