On Sunday, June 21, 2015, more than 4,000 people participated in the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois’ 16th annual Walk for Kidneys. Making it the highest grossing Walk to date, the three-mile walk held at Soldier Field raised more than $240,000 with funds still coming in and donations being accepted. The funds raised will go toward programs dedicated to kidney health education and helping those at risk for or affected by kidney disease across the state.

Kidney disease is on the rise, and currently kills more than 90,000 Americans every year. One in three American adults is at risk for kidney disease. If left untreated, kidney disease can lead to kidney failure, causing those affected to rely on dialysis or a transplant to survive.

Among the attendees at Walk for Kidneys were local Chicago dignitaries, including Secretary of State, Jesse White, and CBS Channel 2 meteorologist, Steve Baskerville. Additionally, Symeria Hudson, head of Global Home Therapies for Presenting Sponsor, Baxter Renal, and Steven Tahmooressi, Assistant Director of Immunology Marketing for Gold Sponsor, Astellas Pharma Inc., were in attendance and expressed their support for the cause.

Prior to the walk, participants took part in a Zumba performance and watched in awe as the Jesse White Tumblers flew through the air, performing their signature routine. For the first time, the speakers and performers energized the crowd inside the Soldier Field Grand Concourse before stepping off for the walk along Lake Michigan.

More than 160 teams formed to raise funds for the Walk. The top five fundraising teams this year—including online and offline donations—are Fresenius Medical Care, bringing in an estimated grand total of more than $21,000, followed closely by Kamphuis Krew, Associates in Nephrology, Team Gordon, and Team King Nolan.

Walk for Kidneys is made possible each year through the immense support of family teams, volunteers, donors and sponsors. Walk for Kidneys was presented by Baxter International, Inc., headquartered in Deerfield, Illinois. Top sponsors also included Gold Sponsor, Astellas Pharma US, Inc and National Partner, Satellite Healthcare, Inc.
