CHAPTER 3:Preparing for Kidney Failure
Topic 1Kidney Failure

Kidney Failure occurs as kidney disease progresses and the kidneys fail, and the body cannot rid itself of excess fluids and harmful wastes which build up in the blood. The following are signs and symptoms of kidney failure: high blood pressure, loss of appetite or nausea, a bad taste in your mouth, edema or swelling of the hands or feet, face and other areas, headaches, the inability to concentrate and feeling weak. There are two kinds of kidney failure: Acute- typically happens quickly and may be caused by environmental factors and is temporary. Chronic- is a slow destruction of normal kidney function and is most likely caused by damage to your kidneys from disease progression. Chronic kidney failure is also known as End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) and kidney function does not return.
