Kidney Function: The kidneys' main functions are to remove waste products and excess fluids, adjust levels of minerals and chemicals and produce hormones. Every day the kidneys filter about 200 quarts of blood as it circulates through the body. Kidney function is often determined by the GFR (Glomerular Filtration Rate), expressed as a percentage that is calculated from patients' weight in kilograms, blood and urine tests.
