Iron is a necessary mineral for the proper function of hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body. Iron is normally stored in the bone marrow and used to make new red blood cells. Low levels of red blood cells and subsequently iron, is one of the most common symptoms of chronic kidney disease.
