Hemoglobin is a part of red blood cells that carries oxygen to all parts of your body. Your hemoglobin level tells your doctor if you have anemia, or a low red blood count. If you have anemia, you may need treatment with a hormone called Erythropoietin, a hormone made in your kidneys that signals your bone marrow to make red blood cells.
