Fluids: The kidneys regulate the removal or retention of body fluids. If the kidneys are not functioning properly, the extra fluid that is retained may cause edema (swelling) of the hands and feet, shortness of breath and high blood pressure. An increase in weight may mean a gain in fluid weight, not necessarily body weight.
