Cholesterol is an important lipid (fat-like substance) that is an essential nutrient for repairing cell membranes, manufacturing vitamin D on the skin's surface and creating hormones, such as estrogen and testosterone. However, high levels of cholesterol can be very dangerous and can be controlled through diet or medication.
