Glomerulonephritis is a disease that causes inflammation of the kidney's tiny filtering units called the glomeruli. There are two types of glomerulonephritis: acute, which can develop suddenly, and chronic, which develops slowly over a period of years. It can be caused by an autoimmune disease, but can also result from infection.
