CHAPTER 1:Risk Factors and Diseases Causing Chronic Kidney Disease
Topic 6Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease of high blood sugars (glucose) and occurs when your body does not produce enough insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is produced by the pancreas. There are two types of diabetes:

Type I - the pancreas does not produce insulin. A person with Type I diabetes must take insulin injections to process the body's glucose (sugar). Often referred to as "Juvenile Diabetes," Type I is usually detected at an early age with a blood test.

Type II - the body does not produce enough insulin or the insulin it does produce is not sufficient to process the body's glucose. Once referred to as "Adult Onset Diabetes," Type II is now affecting a greater number of people due to the prevalence of obesity and inactivity in many individuals, including children.

Symptoms of diabetes can be; frequency of urination (especially at night), wounds on the hands or feet that do not heal, or take a long time to heal, and excessive thirst or hunger and increased fatigue. Diabetes can be treated effectively if detected early.
