The National Kidney Foundation of Illinois (NKFI), a major voluntary health organization, seeks to prevent kidney and urinary tract diseases, improve the health and well-being of individuals and families affected by these diseases, and increase the availability of all organs for transplantation.
The NKFI has provided services and programs for patients, families and communities within Illinois for more than 50 years and is an affiliate of the National Kidney Foundation. The National Kidney Foundation and its affiliates are leaders in the funding of medical research in the area of kidney diseases. Over one third of the medical research funded in the United States for kidney disease is funded by the NKF and its associated affiliates. The Illinois affiliate is a leader in organ donor awareness and in educating the public about the prevention of kidney disease through its diabetes and high blood pressure screenings, and provides a variety of services for patients with kidney, urinary, and related diseases.
Along with a growing Patient and Family membership, hundreds of healthcare professionals in Illinois belong to the NKFI professional councils. These groups provide educational programs for their members and work with the NKFI committees to create relevant and timely patient programs.
